FAQ

  • SAAP is committed to best-fit adoptions and does not adopt pets based on a first come, first served basis. This means we actively work to ensure that each animal finds the most suitable forever home by closely reviewing applications. We work to understand the specific needs, temperament, and behavioral traits of each unique animal to ensure an appropriate match with potential adopters.

  • SAAP does not have set hours as the rescue is 100% volunteer run with no physical shelter or office location. Please email saap@adoptastray.com and a volunteer will get back with you within about 72 hours or call the regularly monitored voicemail line at (859) 391-1234.

  • SAAP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organized in Newport, Kentucky. SAAP is 100% volunteer run with no physical shelter or office location. SAAP dogs and cats are fostered in homes throughout the Cincinnati Tri-State area.

  • For more in depth information on our process, please review the Our Adoption Process page found under the Adopt header of this page.

The process starts with a no-cost application. This can be completed online or in person at one of our adoption events. There are separate applications for cats and dogs and both include a place to list the pet(s) you are interested in meeting. Our applications are always no obligation and an approval is good for 6 months or 1 adoption. SAAP is a best fit rescue, so even if your application is approved you may not be selected to adopt the dog or cat you applied to meet.

if you already have an approved application on file dated within 6 months you can reply to your approval email or send an email to SAAP@adoptastray.com with the name of the pet you are interested in meeting to be considered.

  • We love our repeat adopters! A new application is required for each animal adopted and there are separate applications for dogs and cats if you are considering adding both to your family. Approved applications are valid for 6 months or a completed adoption, whichever comes first.

  • If you are needing to surrender a dog or cat adopted from SAAP, we will always welcome them back to our rescue.

If you find yourself with a stray animal, please contact your the local animal shelter where the pet was found. Most vet offices and shelters will scan the pet free of charge for a microchip. The animal might be someone’s lost pet.

If you are requesting to surrender your own animal to become a SAAP pet, be honest with us about their personality and likes/dislikes so we are able to find the best foster and home for them. You will only get surrender instructions from us for non-SAAP pets if we are able to find a foster for the pet.

Please remember we are an all volunteer foster home-based rescue and space is very limited.

Surrender forms can be found under the Resources tab on this page.

  • Standard adoption fees are $300 for puppies, $200 for adult dogs, $50 for senior dogs, $100 for kittens and $75 for adult cats. Purebred or designer breeds are subject to adjusted adoption fees.

Adoption fees are payable by cash or check and applicable Kentucky Sales Tax will be added if the adoption is finalized in the state of Kentucky.
